Flamengo was fined by Inea (State Environmental Institute) at R $ 902,183.30 for alleged irregular sewage eviction in the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, South Zone of Rio de Janeiro.
Flamengo’s headquarters, which includes the Gávea stadium, basketball and gym gyms and swimming pools, is in front of the lagoon.
Águas do Rio, a concessionaire responsible for sewage in the state, said the situation of eviction in Flamengo has already been regularized, but the fine has been maintained and the club can appeal.
Wanted, Flamengo did not answer.
An INA report signed in February pointed to high presence of ammonia in samples collected in the water, at the time of the club, which would be an indication of sewage launch.
The amount of the fine took into consideration “the amount of sewage dumped in the rainwater gallery located inside the club, the size of the company and the aggravation of reaching urban areas,” according to Inea.
The Águas do Rio recorded 34 irregularities related to irregular eviction in the lagoon, from January to August 2025. In 2024 there were 109 records.
Also according to the concessionaire, 13 sewage elevations were revitalized around the lagoon.
“As a result of these initiatives, 5.1 million liters of sewage ceased to reach the ecosystem daily,” said the river.
