New deaths raise the total number of victims to 289, including 115 children, since the beginning of the Israeli war offensive in October 2023
Eight Palestinians, including a girl, died for lack of water, malnutrition and hunger on Saturday, the Enclave Ministry of Health said on Sunday after documenting the death of eight on Friday (22), including two babies.
These deaths raise the total number of victims to 289, including 115 children, since the beginning of the Israeli war offensive in October 2023. Most of these victims died in summer, as Israeli blockade to supplies generated hunger. The dead girl was identified as one year of age, according to a source from Shifa Hospital, located in the city of Gaza.
One in six children under the age of five in Gaza currently suffers from acute malnutrition, according to a report by the American NGO Medglobal, based on observations made by his team in four of Gaza’s five provinces.
The group warns that all young children of Gaza run the risk of starving without intervention, after the integrated classification of the Food Security Phase (IPC) confirmed for the first time last Friday that hunger is taking place in Gaza province, the most populous area of Enclave.
As a key factor in declaring hunger in the capital and neighboring areas, the group cited especially the exponential increase in child malnutrition. Hunger is likely to spread throughout the territory if a ceasefire is not established or if it does not allow mass humanitarian aid.
UN Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, denounced hunger in the track as “predictable and avoidable,” as food scarcity has been used as a weapon of war by Israel.
