So how to cut the orchid properly?
Before you take the scissors in your hand, look at the structure of your plant. There are two main types of orchids: monopodial (Phalaenopsis or Vanda) that grow up from one main stem, and symptial (oncidium, dendrobium or cattleya), which have more shoots and often grow from pseudo. The monopodial types tolerate the cut of the flower stalk better, while in symptoms often cut only damaged or dead parts.
For Phalaenopsis and similar species, follow the flower stem after the last flower. Find the third bud downwards from where the last flower was and cut just above it. This will support the growth of the new branch and can lead to other flowers within a few months. But if the stem is completely dry or brown, do not be afraid to cut it as low as possible. No new growth will come from it anymore.
Orchids are susceptible to infections, therefore is absolutely key to sterilizing scissors or knife before each cutideally using alcohol or fire. If you cut more parts or more plants, disinfect the tool after each cut. Even a small impurities can take viruses or fungi into the plant.
And what next? Care after cut and the next steps
After trimming, the plant deserves. Place it in light, but not in direct sunlight, and reduce the watering. This simulates the natural phase of peace. Once the orchid begins to form new leaves or airy roots, you can re -increase the watering and possibly move it into a fresh substrate.

Always cut only after full flowering, not during flowering, it could destroy the flowers prematurely. But if you see signs of rot, black spots on leaves or soft roots, act immediately. Always remove the damaged parts to healthy tissue. The sooner you stop such an infection, the greater the chance my plant has to recover.
But the trimming of the flower stem is only part of the care. Do not forget to check the overall condition of the plant: dry leaves, waterlogging or too tight flower pot can prevent orchids from growing. Regular care is not only about aesthetics, but about maintaining orchid in good shape.
