Deputy Mário Heringer believes the fraudulent scheme ‘started a long time ago’

With the beginning of the work of the Mixed Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry () that investigates fraud at the National Institute of Social Security (), the Federal Deputy (PDT-MG) argued that the investigation has a broad scope, retroacting to previous governments to identify the origin and modus operandi of the schemes. In an interview with Young Panthe parliamentarian also criticized the use of committees as a “political stage” and expressed the desire for research to produce concrete results.

CPMI, which will begin the vote of its requirements next Tuesday, has been instituted to investigate irregularities and fraud in the Social Security coffers. According to Heringer, who will participate in his first inquiry committee, the goal is to “demystify the story that it happens in a spontaneous way.”

The deputy believes that the fraudulent scheme “started a long time ago” and had the “connivance of many people to achieve the size they reached.” He argues that the investigation is not limited to the current government, but that it backwards to analyze previous periods, including possible structural changes that may have facilitated irregularities. “If you need to retreat to 2019, 2015, where you have to back down, in my opinion, we have to retreat. We need to seek the origin to understand Modus Operandi,” he said.

Criticism of the trivialization of CPIs

Asked about the popular perception that CPIs became a means for political self -promotion, Heringer agreed that the mechanism was distorted. “CPIs have been used in recent years just to do politics,” he lamented, referring to the popular saying that “every CPI ends in pizza.”

He pointed out that, although the use of social networks to publicize the work is natural, the focus should be serious research and the search for solutions. “Brazil needs to respect its institutions more, but institutions need to be respected,” he said. The ultimate goal, according to the deputy, is to clarify the functioning of the schemes for the population, to punish those responsible regardless of the political party and, fundamentally, to create “prophylactic mechanisms” to prevent fraud from repeating in the future.
