Portuguese tomatoes ‘harvest’ place on the European podium: know the reasons for this success

In 2024, Portugal ended among the three largest tomato producers in the European Union. The data were revealed by the Community Statistical Office Eurostat and confirm that the country took 1.7 million tons of this fruit, a number that put it only behind Italy and Spain.

According to the Statistics Office, Eurostat, Italy ensured the prominent lead with six million tons, while Spain positioned itself in second place with 4.5 million. Portugal, although more distant, consolidated itself as the third largest producer in Europe, representing 10% of the total community harvest of tomatoes.

One year of high crops

The statistics now disclosed show that the European Union has reapted 62.2 million tons of fresh vegetables in 2024, including melons. The volume represents a rise of 6% compared to 2023, the year when 58.8 million tons had been collected.

According to the same source, Spain, Italy and France led the production of fresh vegetables, adding together 55% of the total European. Only Spain produced 14.8 million tons, Italy was close with 13.9 million and France recorded 5.8 million.

Tomatoes, carrots and onions highlighted

The tomatoes were the product that stood out the most. Community production increased by 5% and reached 16.8 million tons. Also the carrots were growing, with 4.7 million tons harvested, 6% more than the previous year. Already the onions recorded an even more significant climb: 11%, reaching 7 million tons.

Italy accounted for 36% of the tomato produced throughout the Union, Spain by 27% and Portugal by 10%. The relative weight of each country confirms the importance of the agricultural sector in southern Europe and the consolidated position of Portuguese agriculture in the segment.

Fruits with slight break

If the vegetables registered a positive time, the same cannot be said of fruits, berries and dry fruits (except citrus, grapes and strawberries). Production totaled 24.3 million tons, a 2% break compared to 2023.

According to community data, Italy also stood out in this sector, with 5.4 million tons. Spain produced 4.3 million and Poland 4.1 million. Together, the three countries represented 57% of the entire European harvest.

According to, these numbers confirm Portugal’s decisive role in tomato cultivation, consolidating a relief position in a strategic sector for national agriculture and for the European Union food balance.
