Vase plants at home often suffer from dry air, especially during the winter when radiators and stoves work tirelessly. However, there is a small trick that can really make a difference and help your plants survive.
Many think that it is enough to water often to keep plants alive, but the question is very different. The humidity of the environment has a huge weight: when it goes down too much, leaves and roots begin to suffer, as if the plant had thirsty even after water. It is curious to note that, despite all the attention, some species seem “off” and without energy. The reason is almost always linked to the dry air that slowly drains their balance. A feeling that recalls when in summer you walk under the scorching sun and you realize that no drink is enough to appease the thirst.
That’s why getting to know a simple trick to bring wellness in the house can really change the situation. There is no need to upset the habits: just a small trick is enough and the green will return luxuriantly. It is worth trying it already today: the plants will repay with new vitality and shining leaves.
Because the dry air ruins pots in pots
When the air becomes too dry, especially in the cold months, the plants enter a condition of stress. The leaves tend to enrich themselves, the edges dry out and sometimes fall prematurely. Even the roots can suffer damage, because the water in the soil evaporates faster, leaving the plant thirsty even if recently watering. The dry air does not affect all plants in the same way. Some species resist better, such as cactus and succulent, while others – for example ferns, orchids and tropical plants – require constant humidity. That’s why in many houses, during the winter, these varieties always seem on the point of giving up.
A common mistake is to excessively increase water in watering. However, this risks causing radical stagnation and rot. The real solution is not in the pot, but in the air that surrounds the plant.
Simple makeup to increase humidity
The most effective remedy is to recreate a more humid microclimate around the plants, without necessarily buying expensive devices. A simple trick consists in using the filled huts filled with expanded clay and water. By placing the vase above the clay, water will evaporate slowly, increasing the humidity of the air around the plant without getting around the roots directly.
Another easy method is to group multiple nearby plants: creating a small “green corner”, the same leaves retain humidity and generate a more favorable microambiente. Alternatively, you can nebble water on the leaves with a sprayer, but always carefully: some plants do not like to have wet leaves too long.
Other useful tricks may be:
- Keep plants away from the radiators and direct heat sources.
- Use a humidifier, if present at home.
- Place bowls of water on the calories to increase the humidity of the room.
Small gestures, but capable of changing the fate of a suffering plant.
How to recognize if the air is too dry for plants in the pot
It does not always realize that the domestic environment has become too dry. A clear clue is to observe the leaves: if the edges become brown or seem dehydrated, the cause is almost always the low humidity. Even a soil that dries too quickly is a signal not to be ignored.
For those who want a more precise fact, small economic hygrometers can be used that measure the level of humidity in the house. In general, houseplants are fine when humidity is between 40% and 60%. If it goes down under this threshold, it becomes urgent to intervene.
An interesting detail is that the health of people is also affected by dry air: dry skin, irritated throat, even more frequent headache. Creating a more humid environment therefore does not only good for plants, but also to those who live in the house.

Each house is different and each plant has its own needs, for this it is worth making tests. You can start with the makeup of the expanded clay and observe how the leaves react in a few days. Sometimes it takes very little to transform a plant off into a lush specimen.
