Government authorizes technical studies of the São Francisco Waterway

Published in the DOU, the ordinance signed by Silvio Costa Filho authorizes the evaluation of the viability of private infrastructure exploitation

The authorized that (Companhia Docas of the State of Bahia) performs the studies necessary to resume the operation of the São Francisco Waterway and make the evaluations to determine the viability of private infrastructure exploration.

The Ordinance, signed by the Minister (Republicans-PE), was published in the edition of this 3rd (26.ago.2025) of the DOU (Official Gazette). Read the version at (PDF – 194 KB).

According to the ordinance, among the “necessary studies”Are the environmental ones.“These studies will subsidize activities related to the exploration and operation of the waterway by Codeba, as well as will be an integral part of the administrative procedure of the possible concession of the waterway structure”He says.

According to the text, studies alone do not require the public power to bid to explore the waterway infrastructure.

The Federal Government the project for the new waterway of São Francisco, to transport cargo from Pirapora (MG) to Juazeiro (BA) and Petrolina (PE).

The goal is to use the 1,371 km navigable extension with a projection of moving 5 million tons.

Predicted loads include agricultural inputs, plaster, gipsite, limestone, grains, beverages, ore and salt.

On his way, Velho Chico passes through the Federal District, Goiás, Bahia, Sergipe, Alagoas and Pernambuco. There are 505 municipalities and over 11.4 million people who, in some way, relate to one of the main Brazilian rivers.

In January this year, the government had already announced that it would work on actions to expand navigability in Brazilian waterways.

Other works planned for this year are the realization of dredging on the waterways of Tapajós and São Francisco, as well as the maintenance of Madeira, Parnaíba and Paraguay.

The Ministry of Ports and Airports considers that today the country has 12,000 km of navigable waterways, with the potential to reach 42,000 km.
