President of the, said on Monday (25/8), in post at X [antigo Twitter]which will retaliate countries that adopt taxes and regulations against the big techs.

“As president of the United States, I will defend our incredible technology sector against countries that attack it. Digital taxes, digital service legislation and digital market regulations are all designed to harm or discriminate against American technology. They also, also give free passage to the largest technology companies in China. This needs to end, and end now! Unless these discriminatory actions are removed, I, as president of the United States, would impose substantial additional fares of exports to the US to the US and institute export restrictions on our highly protected technology and chips. America and American technology companies are no longer the ‘chip’ or the ‘doormat’ in the world. ”

The taxation of the big techs was considered by the Lula administration as a possible response to the tariff imposed on Brazilian exports.

In July, at the 60th Congress of the National Students Union (UNE), Lula stated: “We do not accept that no one gets into our internal affairs. Let’s answer as Democrats: charging tax from US digital companies.”

Trump’s lawyer reacts to Gilmar’s speech

In a publication also made on Monday, Minister Gilmar Mendes (STF) maintained that digital sovereignty should be immediate strategic priority for Brazil. He argued that the country is experiencing “critical dependence on digital infrastructure controlled by foreign companies” and said it was necessary to overcome this vulnerability.

Hours later, lawyer Martin de Luca, who represents Trump Media and the Rumble platform, responded to the minister’s post.

“@Gilmarmendes thanks for making it clear that the masks are falling. Gilmar thought it would be a good idea to shed light on the silent maneuver. According to the STF dean, Brazil should end ‘digital neocolonialism’ and dependence on US platforms.”
