With 116 years just fulfilled, Ethel Caterham is now the oldest person in the world. The British, born in 1909 in Hampshire, southern England, currently lives in a residence in Surrey and surprised to reveal the secret that, she said, helped her cross more than a century of life.
According to Spanish site specializing in Lifestyle, HuffPost, Caterham said in a recent interview that the key to his longevity was simple: “Not discussing anyone.”
A short and unexpected response, which contrasts with the usual diet recommendations, physical exercise or daily habits that are so often pointed out as formulas to achieve unusual ages.
The life of a traveler
Born when Eduardo VII was still king of the United Kingdom, Ethel lived striking historical periods. According to the same newspaper, he spent part of his life in colonial India, he also resided in Hong Kong and Gibraltar, before definitely returned England.
This trajectory allowed him to cross different times and cultures, always accompanied by a remarkable adaptability.
In 1933 he married, but widowed in 1976, almost half a century ago. He writes the same source Ethel maintained autonomy for much of his life, having failed to lead only near the hundred years.
One of the most recent episodes that surprised family and doctors occurred in 2020, when, already 111, managed to recover from the covid-19 infection.
The new dean of the residence
According to a statement sent by the Surrey institution where he now lives, the British became the oldest resident after the death of a Brazilian religious who also inhabited. “Ethhel and his family are deeply grateful for all the messages of affection and concern he received on his 116th birthday,” said the same note.
Caterham’s longevity still draws attention by the historical dimension of the dates. When he was born, the British Empire was in the reign of Eduardo VII, son of Queen Vitória and great-grandfather of Isabel II. Today, the woman who surpassed three centuries sees on the throne Carlos III, her great -tataraneto.
