The damage caused by electric vehicles is higher than that of vehicles with an internal combustion engine, but the difference is reduced. Damage covered by comprehensive insurance is currently 15 % to 20 % more expensive in purely electric vehicles than comparable vehicles with an internal combustion engine. This stems from the analysis published this week of the German Insurance Association (GDV). TASR informs this based on the DPA report.
- Damage in electric vehicles is more expensive, but the difference decreases.
- The cost of electric vehicles repairs is 15-20% higher.
- The frequency of damage in electric vehicles is 10-15%lower.
- Electric vehicles make up 3.5% of registered passenger cars in Germany.
A year ago, the difference ranged from 20 % to 25 %. On the contrary, electric vehicles have an advantage in terms of the frequency of damage. Here too, however, the difference is shrinking – a typical electric car currently causes 10 % to 15 % less insurance damage than a comparable car with an internal combustion engine. A year ago it was 15 % to 20 % less.
“The more electric cars drive on the road, the less their damage differs from the damage of comparable cars with internal combustion engines,” Anja Käfer-Rohrbachová, Deputy Executive Director of GDV. At the same time, car repair shops, towing services, firefighters and experts gain more experience with damaged electric vehicles, she added.
According to the Federal Motor Vehicle Authority (KBA), in Germany, as of April 1, 2025, was registered More than 1.7 million electric cars, which is five times compared to the beginning of 2021. Thus, their share in all registered passenger cars is 3.5 %. For the purposes of the GDV study, it compared 53 model range of electric and combustion cars that are as similar as possible.
