Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said on Wednesday that the Brazilian elite has problems with progressive agendas and added that the governor of Sao Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, placed as a possible candidate from the right to the presidency in 2026, is against the taxation of super rich.

In an interview with the portal UOLin which he did not shy away from political and electoral issues, Haddad charged Tarcisio’s public positions and other eventual opposition candidates on topics such as income tax reform.

“It would be interesting to know what the presidential people think, not just Tarcisio, all who are putting themselves, will they help vote in favor? They will work against? This says a lot to Brazilian society, 80% of the population is in favor of the project,” he said.

Haddad also said he did not believe that Tarcísio would make an election campaign with “low”, although he predicted that the governor’s surroundings can use fake news against the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva government.

In the interview, the minister reaffirmed that, at this time, he has no intention of being a candidate for elective positions in the 2026 elections.

He added it to be natural that Lula covers his ministers of allied parties who defend the guidelines played by the government.

In the economic agenda, Haddad said that there is an understanding between government and party leaders for the project that exempts income tax for those who earn up to $ 5,000 is approved with the compensation proposed by the government, which creates minimal taxation for high -income people. He said he believed the commitment will be honored.

“There is no chance of giving up compensation,” he said.

For the minister, the government will also be able to approve later this year the bill to cut 10% tax benefits not provided for in the Constitution.

Haddad also stated that the government is still willing to negotiate fees with the United States and acts reactively to President Donald Trump’s announcements, noting that it is impossible to predict whether the Americans will expand sanctions to Brazil if former President Jair Bolsonaro is convicted by the Supreme Court (STF) in September.

He stressed that the government acts through the administrative pathways to face tariffs, such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), but will contest Trump’s arguments in the US judiciary if necessary.

In Haddad’s assessment, the dollar should remain the global value reserve for many years, unless the US “continues to make mistakes” in economic policy.
