Mexico City-In search of new markets for Brazilian products, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin met on Wednesday morning (27), with more than 100 Brazilian businessmen in Mexico City, on a mission aimed at expanding exports and strengthening bilateral investments.

The vice president stressed that the business relationship between the two countries should be understood as a two-way road. “When you have better competitiveness, I buy you. When I have, I see you. Win the whole of society. It’s winning, with reciprocal investments,” he said.

Alckmin pointed out that the meeting reflects a direct effort by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to deepen the relationship with Mexico. “We started the day with a very profitable working meeting between government and private sector. Here are the main entities of the productive sector. We will look at these two days to strengthen the Brazil-Myxical Commercial Relationship, the two largest economies and democracies in Latin America,” he said.

The meeting, which was also attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, and the president of Apexbrasil, Jorge Viana, marks the beginning of a diplomatic agenda that will follow in the coming days to Canada.

According to Itamaraty, the meeting had representatives of strategic sectors such as agribusiness, industry, services, technology and financial system. The initiative occurs amid the impact of 50% tariff imposed by the United States on Brazilian products, which has led the Lula government to accelerate the opening of new commercial fronts.

In addition to the agenda of agricultural products, such as meat and agricultural products, Alckmin also mentioned topics such as sanitary agreements and the renewal of Pacic, a Mexican program that controls the prices of food and essential products – and can affect the access of Brazilian exporters to the local market.

Mercosur in Focus

During the event, Alckmin also signaled that the mission to Mexico is part of a broader strategy, which includes approaching Canada and the intensification of negotiations within Mercosur.

“This week we received the Canadian Minister of Commerce and we are advancing in agreements such as Mercosur Singapore, European Mercosur-Union, Mercosur-Efta and Arab Mercosur-Emirate,” he said.

The advancement of these fronts, according to him, demonstrates Brazil’s commitment to multilateralism and free trade, without giving up the historical relationship with the US. “The United States is a priority. We have 201 years of partnership and friendship. But we seek dialogue and economic complementarity with other markets as well,” said the vice president.

Complementarity and Pragmatism

Alckmin’s speech reflects a pragmatic view of the current geopolitical and commercial scenario. “We have Brazilian companies here in Mexico that export even to Brazil. This is economic complementarity. Our work is to facilitate this flow in all directions,” he said.

The Business Mission to Mexico marks the 20th official business trip organized by Apexbrasil in the current government. The model is expected to be institutionalized with regular bilateral meetings every two years.
