Not all do 'well': these are the most dangerous fish in the world for consumption

Certain fish species hide invisible dangers that can go from simple uncomfortable to dictatorship to serious or even fatal poisoning. According to the Argentine Portal Infobae, one of the most read in Latin America, experts warn that natural toxins accumulated in the tissues of some fish can endanger the health of those who consume them, even in small quantities.

Contrary to popular belief, danger is not seen with the naked eye. These toxins do not change the color, smell or taste of the meat, making it difficult to detect. BBC Science Focus Magazine recalls that the risks vary according to the species and the fish diet, often influenced by algae, bacteria or phytoplankton.

Babyfish and Deadly Tetrodotoxin

One of the best known examples is Balloon Fish, or Fugue, consumed in Japan. This fish contains tetrodotoxin, a neurotoxin considered one hundred times more lethal than cyanide. When ingested, it blocks the transmission of nerve impulses and may cause paralysis and respiratory failure within minutes.

The severity of intoxication is such that, in Japan, only chefs with formation and official license can prepare this dish. The goal is to reduce the risk of fatal accidents, as there is no effective antidote against tetrodotoxin.

Fish that provoke hallucinations

The risks are not always deadly, but can be equally disturbing. Salema, common in the Mediterranean and the East Atlantic, can induce visual and auditory hallucinations similar to the effects of LSD. The phenomenon, called ichthioalileileinotoxism, is associated with algae -produced toxins ingested by fish at certain times of the year.

For this reason, the species is nicknamed in some zones of “dream fish”, as consumption can trigger unexpected psychoadelical experiences.

Ciguatoxin in species of Recife

Another growing risk is ciguatoxin, present in fish from Recife such as barracudas, grouper, paragos and moréias. This toxin accumulates in tissues and, when ingested, can cause digestive and neurological symptoms in just 30 minutes.

With global warming and coral degradation, experts warn that the presence of this toxin could increase, making Recife fish an increasingly risky choice in certain regions.

Heavy metals and large fish

In addition to natural toxins, heavy metals also pose danger. Mercury, for example, accumulates in larger species such as spadish fish, shark and giant mackerel. Frequent consumption can cause neurological damage, kidney problems and affect development in children and pregnant women.

Studies cited by the BBC confirm that prolonged exposure to mercury is associated with changes in the nervous system and increased long -term health risks.

Precautions for consumers

To reduce the risks, experts cited by the portal recommend varying fish consumption, privileging smaller species and respecting local sanitary warnings. Ensure the origin of fish and avoid parts such as liver, head and viscera of predatory species are also prevention measures.

Despite the dangers, most fish are still safe and beneficial to health. The essential thing is to know the risks associated with certain species and adopt conscious consumption habits, avoiding unpleasant surprises.
