Strong rainfall caused a landslide on a famous Hindu pilgrimage route in the Jammu region of northern India, killing at least 30 people, Ani news agency said on Wednesday (27).

Floods led authorities to issue alerts so that people stay at home at night.

Meteorological authorities foresee more rain and gusts with wind gusts to the mountainous Ladakh region, while heavy rainfall should reach the federal territory of Jammu and Caxemira.

Authorities struggled to restore telecommunications services, which was “almost nonexistent,” said Omar Abdullah, chief minister of the territory.

Tuesday’s landslide (26), near the Vaishno Devi Sanctuary, on the Pilgrim Route, killed at least 30 people, said Ani, a company in which Reuters hold a small participation.

It was the latest disaster caused by torrential rainfall in the Himalayan region, which killed 60 people and left 200 missing in Kishtwar, Caxemira Indiana last week.

Authorities also ordered the closure of educational institutions in Jammu, which, according to meteorological authorities, was flooded with 368 mm of rain on Tuesday.

The Tawi, Chenab and Basantar rivers overflowed beyond warning levels, causing flooding in low areas, Rakesh Kumar, Jammu district authority, told reporters.

Television images showed vehicles falling into a large hole after the collapse of a bridge over the Tawi River, while some highways that connect Jammu to the rest of India were also damaged.

The neighbor of India, has also faced rainfall in recent weeks.

On Tuesday, Pakistan stated that its Eastern Punjab’s extensive province faces a “very high to the exceptionally high” risk due to a combination of heavy rainfall and India’s decision to release waters from two dams.

The number of displaced in the province now exceeds 150,000, including almost 35,000 who voluntarily left after flood alerts triggered by heavy rains since August 14, authorities said.
