Russia plans to leave the European Convention to prevent torture and inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. It is one of the Conventions adopted by the Council of Europe (RE). This stems from a document published on Monday by Russian Prime Minister Mišustin. TASR writes about it according to Politico portal.

Russian government chief President Vladimir Putin in the decree proposed to submit withdrawal from the State Duma Convention (the Lower Chamber of the Russian Parliament). The formal date of performance has not been set.

According to Politico, Russia’s performance is a symbolic step, as there is a major violation of human rights in the country. The poor situation in the human rights area worsened after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Politico recalls that Kremlin in prisons torture mainly political prisoners. The victim was also the opposition leader Alexei Navaľnyj, who died last year in the punishment colony. Russia is also torturing Ukrainian prisoners of war.

The European Convention to prevent torture and inhuman or humiliating treatment or punishment was adopted in 1987 and is one of the key contracts of RE. Allows Committee Members to Control Prison Facilities in Member States. The Committee focuses mainly on the overcrowding of prisons and improve the conditions for prisoners. Russia was excluded from the REA shortly after the start of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
