The Eusebio Poncela actor dies at 79 | Culture

The actor Eusebio Poncela has died this Wednesday at age 79. Sources in his environment have confirmed to El País that he had suffered from cancer for a year and that he has died at his home in El Escorial. Iconic face of a master and cultpation as his memory will be linked to the cinema of Matador (1986) y The Law of Desire (1987). And however, he participated in more than a hundred plays, television series and other films such as Martín (Hache), Operation Ogro o Intact.

Poncela was born in Madrid in 1945 already throughout his career he worked in theater, cinema and television. Formed in the Independent Theater of the 70s, he consolidated himself in the scene with works by authors such as Jean Genet or Heiner Müller. In the cinema he reached great notoriety thanks to films such as Rapture (1979) by Iván Zulueta, The Law of Desire (1987) by Pedro Almodóvar the Martín (Hache) (1997) by Adolfo Aristarain.

Throughout his career, the Madrid actor received important recognition. Among them, the Sant Jordi Award is the best Spanish actor for The arrangement (1983) and by Martín (Hache) (1997), the silver condor for the best cast actor for this last film, and the Nacho Martínez Award at the Gijón International Film Festival (2004) for its career. He was also distinguished with the Sant Jordi Special Prize of Cinematography (2017) throughout his career and with the Iris Award for the best actor on television for his work in Carlos, Emperor King (2016).
