IPEC/DISCLOSURE
Only one animal was rescued alive and continues in the process of rehabilitation

The number of penguins found dead on the coast of São Paulo reached 881, according to balanced balance by the Research Institute Channel (IPEC) Until last Monday (25). Only one animal was rescued alive and is still in the process of rehabilitation. The highest concentration of occurrences was recorded in on the south coast, where, on the 19th, the institute had already communicated the death of 350 penguins within four days. In a statement released on social networks, IPEC reported that recent monitoring in the region found a large number of stressed penguins (Spheniscus magellanic), all already in advanced stage of decomposition, which prevents the exact determination of the cause of deaths.

Nevertheless, the institute points out as possible factors to long migration, food scarcity, parasites, infections and interaction with fishing activities. The monitoring work is still being done by the Santos Basin Beaches Monitoring Project (PMP-BS), which accompanies records in Iguape, Ilha Comprido and Cananéia.

In a statement published on August 18, IPEC had already warned of a worrying scenario this season, with a large number of stranded animals, many of them weakened. Compared to the previous two years, the 2025 penguins have reached the beaches:

  • With low weight and cases of severe hypothermia;
  • With signs of interaction with fishing nets;
  • And presenting significant breathing problems.

At that date, the institute had recorded 166 animals, of which only 19 were alive and could be referred for rehab. Among the survivors, stands out the P07, a seventh penguin to be rescued this season. Found on July 4, at Jureia (SP) beach, the animal remains recovering at the base of IPEC.
