Allies of the Environment Minister, and leaders of his party, A, began to consider her candidacy for Sao Paulo in 2026, if Finance Minister Fernando Haddad does not leave a candidate for one of the two chairs in dispute of the house.
The Lula administration faces difficulty finding competitive names in the state for the government and the two vacancies to the Senate that will be opened in 2026.
In this scenario, Marina, who was elected federal deputy by São Paulo in 2022, could emerge as an alternative. She was a senator for Acre for eight years from 1995 to 2011, before moving her home to Sao Paulo.
Another possibility is that she apply for another term in, as a way to help her party fulfill the barrier clause.
Marina has stated that until November, her main focus is on COP30, which will take place in Belém, in addition to the ministry’s agenda. To compete in the election, she will have to leave the government until early April 2026.
“Historically the minister is guided by the contribution he can make to Brazil. Its commitment is to the reelection of President Lula, the strengthening of our democracy and growth of leaders who understand sustainability as a fundamental value. In this sense, it is available to add to other leadership in São Paulo, such as Minister Fernando Haddad and Vice President Geraldo Alckmin,” says Giovanni, the leader of the network and Marina’s ally.
For the leader, the Senate dispute “can be a way for that” and, at the moment, Marina’s group is “evaluating all possibilities”.
