Mother is arrested suspected of poisoning and killing nine -month baby in SP

The São Paulo Civil Police temporarily arrested, on Wednesday (27), Giovanna Chiquinelli Marcatto, 26, mother of baby Dante, only nine months, who died On the night of last Tuesday (26). The arrest was decreed for 30 days under suspected qualified homicide.

According to the police report, Giovanna took her son to Vila Alpina State Hospital after he had difficulty breathing around 20:30. The boy did not resist and had the death found at 8:47 pm.

The necroscopic examination identified in the child’s stomach “Blue seeds” very similar to rat poison known as “sunflower poison”. The discovery raised which led the police to intensify the investigations.

Investigations and Diligences

The Civil Police searched the mother’s residence, in the nursery where the child remained and in family properties. Among the seized items are bottles, food utensils, cell phones and even Dante’s school schedule.

According to Deputy Alexandre Bento, head of the 42nd Police District of Parque São Lucas, the investigators were able to identify the place where the poison would have been acquired. In the establishment, images of security cameras and testimonials of witnesses were collected, who provided evidence of the authorship.

“The work was hard, with several field steps. We were able to raise evidence that points to the purchase of the poison and reinforce the need for temporary arrest,” said the delegate.

Next Steps

The case is still under investigation. Witnesses will still be heard, and complementary expert reports must be added to the inquiry. The goal is to confirm the cause of death and clarify how the substance would have been ingested by the baby.

The Civil Police treats the episode as qualified homicide.
