Since childhood, we have been instilled that we have to drink sufficiently because the body needs hydration. Clear water is clearly preferred. But what if it is not the ideal thing we can offer to the body for this purpose? Scientists came up with a turning point…
No one doubts and probably will never doubt that we have no hope of existence without water – and not only us, but also other animal or plant species in the world. However, this has not yet excluded the opportunity to think about whether it is the only and best option for hydration. According to new studies, there are drinks that perform this function much better and for a longer period of time. Milk settled on the highest podium.
Beverage moisturizing
Scientists from the Scottish University of St. Andrews dealt with this question for quite a long time and, based on their knowledge, developed the so -called beverage moisturizing index. It is nothing more than a time that the body keeps the fluid from drinking from its drink – that is, how long it is hydrated sufficiently. And here They came up with an interesting finding that while the water is absorbed and thus also excludes from the body relatively quickly, there are drinks in which this process is significantly slower. Milk is a little unexpected record holder in this “discipline”.
Milk contains important substances
Why is that? On closer reflection, the reasons are actually logical. Milk contains not only water itself, but also lactose, proteins and fats. They keep milk in the stomach longer and ensure more gradual and lasting body hydration. Sodium, which contains milk contains, is also beneficial. It acts like a mushroom that helps the body to keep the water a little longer.

Electrolytes help keep water in the body
Thus, the basis of sufficient hydration of the body is not only the amount of liquid drunk, but also its composition, and important are (for example sodium and potassium) that help to use the fluid better. And because in clean water is practically missing, it cannot absorb into the body so easily and especially effectively. Moreover Too large volume of clean water leads to faster excretion and thus also to early dehydration of the body.
There are other options
We’ve already talked about milk, but are there other alternatives? On the market are available juices and teas with the appropriate electrolyte content, whose function is no longer doubted or special dehydration solutions. However, we do not want to question the importance of drinking water – it is only appropriate to replenish it with other drinks that will keep it in the body longer.
Beware of dehydration
While some fluids, as we now know now, help the body in this direction, there are also those with the opposite effect. For example, we can mention traditional drinks as or beer. Although they are not as much disaster as we often consider them, it will be better to avoid them especially on tropical days.
