A recently approved regulation defines financial support designed to stimulate birth in the municipality of Tavira. The measure, called “Tavira grows”, aims to support families with children registered in the municipality and seeks to respond to the decrease in births in recent years.
Published in Diário da República, the proposal came from the City Council and was unanimously approved at the Municipal Assembly, in a session that took place on June 18, 2025. The regulation came into force last Thursday, August 28.
Differentiated supports depending on the parish
The regulation establishes that all children recorded as Natural of Tavira may benefit from support, provided that at least one of the parents reside in the county. The defined value ranges from 300 to 500 euros, depending on the parish of residence.
According to the same source, families residing in the parishes of Cachopo and Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo, classified as low density territories, will be entitled to the highest amount of 500 euros. Already residents in the parishes of Conceição and Cabanas de Tavira, Luz de Tavira and Santo Stephen, Santa Luzia and Tavira receive 300 euros.
Conditions and deadlines for applications
The regulation determines that applications should be presented up to three months after the child’s birth. The request is formalized in its own form and accompanied by documents such as the birth certificate, identification of parents, proof of residence and bank identification number.
In case of adoption, documents that prove the judicial or administrative decision that entrusted the child to the applicant must also be presented. The Municipality may request additional documentation if it proves to be necessary for the analysis of the process.
PURPOSE OF MEASURE
The publication in the point that this initiative intends not only to support families, but also contribute to the fixation of population in the county and to wage the tendency of demographic aging. The municipality expects the measure to encourage the increase in birth and the reinforcement of the school community, especially in areas more affected by population desertification.
According to the same source, the amount available for supports depends on the budget allocation approved annually. Applications will only be accepted when the financial and logistical conditions are gathered for the execution of the program.
Barriers and consequences
It refers to the document that, if false statements are made, the support will be immediately revoked, implying the return of the amounts received and may give rise to criminal proceedings. Any doubts or omissions in the application of the regulation will be resolved by deliberation of the City Council or by decision of the president of the municipality.
