The war in Gaza and its terrible humanitarian consequences “are the result of deliberate decisions that challenge the most basic humanity (because) Israel, as an occupying power, has clear obligations,” said Thursday in the UN Secretary General, António Guterres.
Guterres specifically referred to the fact that “people are starving, families are broken by displacements and despair, pregnant women face inconceivable risks and vital systems of food, water and health have been systematically dismantled,” he said, describing these facts as “decisions” of Israel.
The general secretary, back from a long trip through Asia, said that Israel’s plans to attack the city of Gaza “must cease () will bring devastating consequences”, before condemning the murder of journalists in the recent attack to the hospital to the Naser de Khan Younes, attacks that “are part of the endless catalog of horrors” that also occur “with the whole world looking.”
The minimum solution that Guterres claims: high fire, hostage delivery and humanitarian aid
“There must be accountability,” said the Portuguese politician. He stressed that the UN and other collaborating organizations are doing in Gaza “everything they can, often with serious personal risk”, but “day after day, our efforts are blocked, delayed or denied”, in reference to the obstacles that Israel imposes on the humanitarian aid missions that wait for days at the borders of Gaza without achieving a permission of Israel.
The solution, Guterres repeated, passes through a high immediate fire, the unconditional release of all the hostages and hands of Hamas and the unrestricted entry of humanitarian aid in Gaza. “Enough of excuses. Enough of obstacles. Enough of lies,” Guterres settled.
