It sounds forgotten money, but it's a scam: know how the trick of the note in the ATM works and protects the 'wallet'

Raising money in a crowd box is a banal routine, but it remains one of the favorite moments of the burns to deceive victims. The latest scheme, already identified in various locations, is called “the note trick” and consists of leaving a simple grade attached to the machine’s groove. At first glance it seems that someone has forgotten the money, but it is actually the beginning of a scam that can be expensive for those who fall into the trap.

How the note trick works

According to alerts issued by bank safety entities and cited by the Leak technology site, the scam is simple but effective. The burlon leaves a partially visible note at the automatic box output. Anyone who approaches the machine thinks they are facing forgotten money and tries to remove it.

This is when the criminal acts. It may be around observing, may have a hidden camera to film the introduction of PIN or even approach to offer help. While the victim’s attention focuses on the note, the real goal is to obtain card data, register the code or cause the card itself to retention on the machine.

Because this scheme results

According to experts cited by the same source, the blow works because it moves a basic human reflection: the opportunity to find unexpected money. This instinctive reaction creates the distraction necessary for the scam to succeed.

In many cases, the trick is applied in busy places, where the victim feels the pressure to act quickly. This haste increases the likelihood of typing the PIN carelessly or accepting the “help” of strangers.

Other schemes in ATM BOXES

The note trick is just one of the ways used by burns to manipulate ATM clients. There are other common methods, such as skimming, which uses devices to copy card data, or the installation of small cameras to record PIN.

As Leak explains, there are also mechanisms that block the exit of money, allowing the criminal to collect it later, as well as direct approaches in which a victim is distracted while someone else acts. All methods have in common the use of the lack of attention.

How can you protect yourself

If you see a note stuck in the grooving of a crowd, do not try to remove it. The recommendation is to immediately cancel the operation and remove the card if it has already been inserted. Never accept help from strangers, even if they perform cordially, and always prefer machines in watched places.

Another essential care, explains the same source, is to check the state of the box before using it. Loose parts, different shape grooves or signs of manipulation are indicators that the machine may have been tampered with.

What to do if you’ve been a victim

Those who fall into this type of scam should act quickly. The first step, as explained, is to block the card through the bank’s emergency line. Then it is important to check suspicious movements in the account, file a complaint to the police authorities and inform the financial institution to inspect the machine.

The sooner these measurements are taken, the more likely to limit damage and recover part of the lost value.
