Marked to start on September 2, the judgment of the accused of attempted coup d’état in Brazil will be apex. The proximity of the event involves the country in “tense moment”, which is understandable given the unprecedented situation.
After all, as the minister also pointed out, it is the end of a cycle “in which he considered legitimate and acceptable to break constitutional legality for not enjoying the electoral result.” In fact, more than one cycle and more than mere dissatisfaction with ballot box choices, the trial foreshadows a mature step in the settlement of Brazilian accounts with democratic stability.
In this sense, what we are witnessing is historical greatness in a political culture always inclined to the accommodation, violent and opportunistic favor of the elites, ambiguities in the treatment of laws, the tergiverseses with the defense of rights and casuism that undermines institutions.
These are traits that continue to mark Brazilian public life, as it turns out, among so many examples, in the articulation of the PEC of Armage by the House, with the objective of removing Congress from the scope of justice. The project is a kind of prior amnesty for parliamentary delinquency.
In a nation where the role of the armed forces in institutional framing has special relevance. Military associations with elites sectors to interfere with the course of politics and protect society, which redemocratization in recent decades did not completely remedy – as they attest to the election of a puppy of the holders of the military regime and the conspiracy against the rule of law which, according to the evidence, he led.
The case runs in a troubled moment, both for the proximity of the election year and for the extemporaneous attempt of new US intervention in defense of the far right in Brazil. This time that in the same direction, it seeks to undermine democracy in his country – a time more like an autocracy.
The tension to which Barroso referred is also fed by this external factor, which has led to cowardly and malicious speculation, with a view to pressing the Supreme and benefits Bolsonaro, his family and minions.
This is not the time for Brazil and the defenders of democracy to feel cornered by possible retaliation of the White House and the screaming Bolsonarist. Even if new sanctions will be announced and cause momentary damage, the great defeat would be the country to bear themselves.
The reconquest of democracy after the 1964 coup was the result of the action of Brazilians who faced the violence installed in the state, the repression, torture and the US support to the will. It was not a kissed hand.
We hope the Supreme will lead the trial in a serene and grounded manner, with respect to the defendants’ guarantees, so that the country can go through this difficult stage – the persistence of old scammer impulses – and consolidate their democracy.
