Petongtán Šinavatrová lost the post of Thai Prime Minister for a call with the chairman of the Cambodian Senate.
The Thai Constitutional Court dismissed Prime Minister Petongtán Šinavatrová on Friday. According to the verdict, a 39-year-old politician with a call with a representative of Cambodia damaged national interests and violated ethical standards. According to DPA, TASR reports this.
Petongtán Šinavatrová, who became the Prime Minister just a year ago, suspended the performance of office at the beginning of July. After the court’s decision, she told reporters that she would accept the verdict. The entire cabinet must also resign.
The controversial phone call escalated the conflict
The court ruled on the case of a leaked recording of a telephone conversation Petongtán with a former long -time prime minister and current chairman of the Senate Cambodia Hun Hun, in which she called him “Uncle” and criticized the commander of the Thai army.
The phone call concerned the border conflict between the two countries, which shortly thereafter escalated into armed rainfall. In Thailand, the army has a significant influence and the criticism of its representatives is considered to be a red line.
Petongtán faced harsh accusations
Petongtan apologized for her statements and said it was a negotiating tactic. However, she faced protests and together with her family and allegations that it has allowed the escalation of a conflict that has been running for decades for close ties with the Cambodian leader.
