The Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE), together with the green wines, Douro and Porto, will intensify, during the vintage in these regions, control of the authenticity and quality of the grapes, this Saturday was announced.
“There is a need to do, during this period of vintage, an additional control to the one that is already done throughout the year by each of the organizations and institutions,” Lusa told the chairman of the Viticulture Commission of the Verdes Vinhos Region (CVRVV).
Dora Simões explained that more than 15 years ago, CVRVV and the Douro and Porto Vinhos Institute (IVDP) have a cooperation protocol that aims, at this time of year, the control of crisp, namely the traceability of grapes with denomination of origin.
“Control can be grapes and grapes and wines to ensure that the origin of the grapes is, in fact, the one that then the consumer will find on the label,” he specified.
The president of CVRVV pointed out that the three entities develop joint actions throughout the year, but at this stage they increase control because, the result of the vintage, there is more transit of grapes and wine movement in the wineries.
“What we intend is that the name of origin will be guaranteed from the vineyard to the wine bottle that is at the point of sale,” he said.
Dora Simões stressed that every year irregularities of different types of gravity are detected.
“The idea of these controls is, in the first line, to have a deterrent effect,” he said.
Wine production in this 2025/2026 campaign is expected to drop 11% to 6.2 million hectoliters, especially in Douro, Lisbon and Alentejo, according to estimates of the Vinha and Wine Institute (IVV).
“It is estimated that wine production in the 2025/2026 campaign reaches a volume of 6.2 million hectoliters, less 11% than in the previous campaign,” reads an IVV informative note dated July.
The largest descents are in Douro (-20%), Lisbon (-15%) and Alentejo (-15%).
In the whole, these three regions will produce 679,000 hectoliters compared to the previous campaign.
This descent is the result of metrological instability, which created conditions conducive to the development of fungal diseases.
