The government will give an extraordinary supplement to pensioners in 2025. The measure, already approved by the Council of Ministers, will be paid next month.
Most pensioners will receive an extraordinary pension supplement in September 2025 that can range from 100 to 200 euros. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, on July 17, in the debate on the State of the Nation.
The measure was approved by the Council of Ministers the next day and translates into the replacement of a support similar to what had already been granted in 2024. According to the Montepio website, this supplement will impact on most Portuguese pensioners.
Who is entitled to the extraordinary supplement
Support encompasses old -age pensioners, disability and social security survival, Caixa Geral de Retirement (CGA) and the banking sector. To benefit from this bonuses, pensioners must receive a global pension amount up to three times the current social support (IAS), which currently corresponds to 1,567.5 euros.
Exclusions expressed by law
Pensions of an indemnity nature, pensions due to professional illness (permanent disability and death), non -contributory pensions of the CGA and the addiction supplements, by spouse and supportive to the elderly are excluded.
How many pensioners will be covered
According to data from Montepio, the supplement will reach more than two million pensioners, representing about 94% of the total.
The defined values
The amount of the extraordinary supplement depends on the global value of pensions received by each pensioner. Three levels were established:
- 200 euros: for pensions up to once (522.5 euros);
- 150 euros: for pensions between one and twice the IAS (522.5 to 1 045 euros);
- 100 euros: For pensions between two and three times IAS (from 1 045 to 1 567.5 euros).
For example, a pensioner who receives 450 euros of old age pension and 300 euros of survival pension, totaling 750 euros, will be entitled to 150 euros. Already a pensioner who receives 500 euros of old age and 600 euros of survival, totaling 1 100 euros, will receive 100 euros.
If you have more than a pension
When there are pensions paid by different entities (eg, social security and CGA), the supplement is paid by each entity in proportion to the value of the respective pension. In cases of unified pension, payment is made by the entity responsible for this pension.
Payment in September
The supplement will be paid only once, along with September pensions. Social Security pensioners will receive the amount on September 8, while those at Caixa Geral de Retirement will have payment on the 19th of the same month.
Automatic process
Payment will be made automatically, without any request by pensioners. Support will be credited by bank transfer or sent by postal voucher, according to the usual form of receipt of the pension.
Tax issues
According to this, this supplement will not be retention at the source of IRS at the time of payment. However, the amount will be considered in the income statement to be presented in 2026, in relation to the fiscal year of 2025.
Exceptional
The government underlines that this support is not an increase in the pension, but an exceptional supplement to be paid only in September.
