“Don't do this”: British resident in this famous European tourist destination launches warning to visitors

Traveling to this tourist destination near Portugal, as well as for so many others, especially in summer time, is synonymous with high prices, in particular for those who decide to have dinner. Still, a recent case reported by the digital newspaper HuffPost eventually surprised two customers, not only for the meal value, but for an additional rate of the restaurant that generated indignation.

Says it became news

The two women already expected to pay dearly for the gastronomic experience at this restaurant in Ibiza, but were surprised when they saw a 26.20 euros “service rate” in the final bead. In total, the meal rose to 288.20 euros. Among the items were a bottle of water to five euros, a 48 euros solomillo, an anchovies salad for 25 euros and spinach croquettes to eight euros.

Rate considered illegal in Spain

According to occupation (consumers and users’ organization), this type of collection is not allowed by Spanish legislation. An additional rate can only be applied if it corresponds to an effectively extra and previously indicated service in the menu.

In the case in question, there was no explicit mention, so the “service rate” was considered unjustified, according to the same source.

Customers were deceived

The two young women abandoned the restaurant with the feeling of being, at least, deceived. They chose not to tip and advanced with a complaint to the consumer authorities. The situation was widely publicized on social networks, in particular by account @soycamarerooo, which is dedicated to exposing abusive practices in the restoration sector and defending workers’ rights.

Reactions divided into networks

The episode generated thousands of comments online. Most supported the complaints of customers, criticizing the restaurant for improper collection. However, some voices minimized what happened, claiming that those who spend almost 300 euros at a dinner for two people should not worry about a difference of 26 euros.

Others, according to the same source, even moved that, alternatively, “there is always McDonald’s of Ibiza, where they do not charge service.”

Tour Pressure Reflection

As reported, this case illustrates the climate of growing tension between residents, tourists and establishments in large demand destinations, such as Ibiza.

In a summer marked by high prices in accommodation, restoration and transport, even a simple detail in the account eventually turned into a symbol of controversy around luxury tourism and abusive practices on Balear Island.
