An air strike will have killed Abu obeid, the most recognized face of the Hamas Military Wing. The confirmation comes from a Palestinian source to Saudi television al-Arabiya, but the Islamite movement has not yet officialized the death of its most media spokesman
It was the metallic voice, always hidden behind a red handkerchief that announced operations, threats, and statements of war.
Last night, according to a Palestinian source to Al-Arabiya, this voice was silenced. Abu Obeida, name of war by Hudayfa Samir Abdallah al-Kahlout, would have died in an air strike in Gaza, inside an apartment in the city of Gaza in the north of the track.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet information service announced in a statement that they had reached a “Hamas Senior Operational” in the city of Gaza, although not revealing names. The Hebrew press quickly advanced that the target was Abu obeid, spokesman for the movement’s military wing, for years one of the most recognized faces of Hamas’s propaganda-even if he had never shown his face.
However, the same Palestinian source told Saudi al-Arabiya television that all who were in the apartment died, including Hamas spokesman. He also added that movement leaders and family members identified the body and confirmed the death of Abu obeida.
Still, Hamas maintains silence. Which is not unheard of. Sometimes months pass until the movement confirms the death of its leaders and other high paintings, in a strategy of political calculation and also psychological: never assume loss, never assume defeat.
If confirmed, the death of Abu obeida will represent not only a military but also symbolic coup. His voice had become an integral part of Hamas’s rhetoric, which now (like others) may have been definitively silenced by Israel.
