More than 300 tons of help start from Genoa to join the flotilla to Gaza
Boats with more than 300 tons of humanitarian aid sail this Sunday from Genoa (northern Italy), as part of the International Global Mission Sumud Flotilla, the largest civil fleet organized to date to Gaza to open a humanitarian corridor and send essential products to the Palestinian people, while Israeli attacks intensify in the strip.
The help collection, coordinated by the Italian NGO Music For Peace, exceeded the expectations, as it was expected to gather 40 tons in four days, but in just five days the 300 were reached. “We had to stop the collection,” said Stefano Rebora, founder of the organization and veteran of more than 50 humanitarian missions in conflict areas.
The fleet, composed of around 50 vessels from all over Europe, will sail at different stages: this Sunday from Barcelona and Genoa and September 4 from Tunisia, Greece and Sicily. All will meet in international waters, where they will continue their route to Gaza with the participation of hundreds of activists and volunteers from more than 44 countries.
The strong citizen support for the initiative was evident on Saturday night, when about 40,000 people, including the mayor of Genoa, Silvia Salis, participated in a march through the streets of the city to “accompany” until the port the help collected by Music For Peace and Calp to join the Global Sumud Flot to Gaza.
