Today, several states allow vote without requiring any kind of voter identification; Republican also wants to restrict sending the vote by mail and says he intends to reduce fraud in the 2026 term elections of office
The (Republican) president of the United States said on Saturday (30.ago.2025) that he will sign a decree to make the use of identification document mandatory by all voters.
“The voter’s identity document must be part of each vote. Without exceptions! I will sign an executive order for that!”the Republican in the Social Truth.
The Republican has stated that he intends to restrict the vote by correspondence, allowing him only in cases of military personnel who are not in the US and seriously sick people.
Changes in Elections
Trump insists on changes in the US electoral system since losing the 2020 elections to Democrat Joe Biden. He claimed, without evidence, that there was in the election.
In March 2025, the Republican there was already a decree that required proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections to prevent “Foreigners to interfere with US elections”.
At the time, he praised rules of the Brazilian electoral system, such as the requirement for biometric identification to vote.
“Brazil and India link the voter’s identification to a biometric database, while the United States depend widely on citizenship self -declaration. ”says the decree.
However, a judge suspended parts of the measure because it considers that the US Constitution gives states and congress the competence to define electoral rules.
Dispute between Trump and Kamala
In the 2024 elections, Democrat Kamala Harris won 13 of the 15 states that do not completely require identity document to vote. She got most votes in: California, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, New Mexico, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.
Trump won in the remaining 2: Nevada and Pennsylvania.
Kamala also won a majority in 6 of the 35 states that adopt identification requirements such as Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Virginia.
Republican allies explored the situation to reinforce the thesis that the absence of rigid rules facilitates fraud.
In an at the X (Ex-Twitter), businessman Elon Musk shared in November 2024 a map with the comparison between the states that require document and those that were conquered by each candidate. “It must be a coincidence”he declared.
Elections in 2026
Trump’s announcement focuses on the middle -term elections, called midtermson November 3, 2026. This type of claim occurs every 4 years, in the middle of the presidential term, and serves as a thermometer of government popularity.
It will be the first great test of the current management since Trump’s return to the White House. In this dispute, the maintenance of republican control over the House and the Senate will be at stake.
