Democratic deputy, known as AOC, wants the US government to present the reasons why Brazil would be a threat to the United States that justifies the sanctions applied by Donald Trump.
The request was made through a proposal for amendment to the Bill that defines the US defense budget and would need to be approved by parliamentarians to be accepted.
As Democrats are a minority in the US Congress, the measure will hardly pass. Still, the presentation of the text represents a parliamentary gesture, which is one of the most prominent figures of the Democratic Party in the US.
The project that provides for the defense budget already has 985 amendment proposals. In the suggestion, AOC calls for the agency to send to Congress a report detailing what the government’s policies and practices would be that “constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat” to national security, foreign policy and economics.

“Instructs the Department of Defense to conduct an assessment of whether the imposition of tariffs to Brazil, in response to legal proceedings carried out in accordance with Brazilian constitutional legislation and principles, contributes to US national security objectives in the region and the global scenario,” says the amendment proposal.
The deputy also requests that the Secretariat of Defense makes an assessment of the impact of the sanction applied to Brazil on relations between the country and the US, “the two greatest democracies in the hemisphere,” she says.
