The roses are among the most loved flowers, but suffer in seasonal passages. The temperature changes put them to the test, yet with few precautions they manage to give splendid blooms even in the delicate moments of the year.

Plants are said to feel the change of time almost like people: some face it without problems, others instead become more fragile. Roses are part of this second category. Behind elegant petals there is a delicate nature that needs particular care in transition periods. Sometimes the difference between a squad that roughly roughly and one who goes out is all in small daily gestures, apparently insignificant.
It is worth putting one of these tips immediately, even if only as a test. Often very little is enough: an extra attention, one more look, and the plant responds. It is surprising how to observe flowers every day makes it clear how sensitive to the attention they receive.
Protect the roots of roses with natural mulch
A simple but powerful remedy is the mulch. No special tools are needed: dry leaves, straw or cortex are enough to spread around the roots. A layer of a few centimeters becomes a sort of blanket that maintains the soil stable and humid. In autumn the mulch fencing with sudden frosts, in the spring the changes of temperature dampens that can stress the roots. And over time these organic materials are transformed into nourishment, enriching the soil without the need for artificial fertilizers. An extra advantage that often goes unnoticed.
In the gardens of the past it was almost a spontaneous habit, manuals or expert advice were not needed. And maybe this is precisely the point: why give up a natural, simple and effective remedy that has been working for generations?
Light pruning at the right time
The pruning of the roses It is never the same for all seasons. In the periods of passage it serves delicacy: it is not necessary to cut too much, just eliminate the dry or damaged branches. Thus the plant retains energy and is better prepared for the new blooms.
This gesture brings with it more advantages than it seems:
- It allows the air to circulate better, avoiding fungal diseases.
- It stimulates the birth of new healthy sprouts.
- It makes the plant concentrate on the strongest parts, without dispersing energy.
A trick that few consider: always use sharp scissors and cut diagonally. It may seem like a detail, but reduces the risk that the rose gets up through the wounds. Sometimes the details really make the difference.
Balanced and controlled irrigation of roses
When it comes to irrigationmany think that “more water” means greater protection. In reality it is the opposite: too much water creates stagnation and problems, too much little weakens the plant just when more energy would be needed.
The secret lies in balance. It is better to water in the morning, when the soil absorbs better and the plant has all day to take advantage of humidity. Few watering, but deep, are more effective than many small superficial interventions. In this way the roots learn to go down deep, becoming more robust.
Many gardeners do not rely on rigid calendars: they simply put a finger in the ground to understand if it is humid. A simple, almost instinctive gesture, which often says more than any tool.
Three easy moves – mulching, pruning and balanced irrigation – can change the fate of roses in seasonal passages. Each plant has its own character, but with constancy and small attentions the difference can be seen immediately. It is not necessary to have a large garden: even in a vase on the balcony the satisfaction of seeing a rose flour after the winter or a difficult period is enormous.
And, in the end, roses always have a special way of repaying the care received.
