The resolution, which was supported by 86 percent of the organization’s members, is based on the definition of this crime according to the UN Convention of 1948. Israel is already facing similar charges at the International Court of Justice in the Hague.
The Chairman of the International Association of Genocide experts (IAGS) announced on Monday that, according to the latest resolution of the organization, the legal criteria were met that Israel was committed in the Gaza Genocid band. According to Reuters report, TASR reports this.
Israel did not comment on the resolution, but in the past the accusations of committing genocide refused
The resolutions were supported by 86 percent of the 500 voting members of the IAGS. The resolution notes that “Israel’s policy and action in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide under Article II of the United Nations Convention on the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide (1948)”.
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not respond immediately to the resolution. In the past, however, the country has been strongly denied that its actions in the Gaza Strip are genocide, and therefore it is also facing charges at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in Hague.
Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip have claimed approximately 63,000 victims since October 2023
Reuters explains that since its foundation in 1994, the Association of Genocide experts has adopted nine resolutions in which it has recognized historical or ongoing events for genocide.
Israel attacked the Gaza Strip in October 2023 after the attack of the Palestinian militant Hamas movement to the surrounding Israeli communities. The Israeli military operations in the enclave have since been killed by approximately 63,000 people, damaged or destroyed most of the buildings, and forced almost all its residents to leave their homes at least once, Reuters adds.
