The lynchings against people accused of blaspheming or other crimes, such as robbery or witchcraft, have happened relatively frequently in Nigeria and have caused hundreds of dead in recent years.
The murders happen especially in the north of the country, of a Muslim majority, and are often backed by clergymen that encourage the population to take justice by their own hands.
