The governor of Sao Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), preferred to avoid the spotlight on Monday, 1st, the eve of the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) at the Supreme Court (STF). Among the internal agendas at the Bandeirantes Palace, however, was a meeting with the president of his party, Marcos Pereira. According to the party leader, the meeting dealt with the “amnesty”.
In addition to the bill that is being processed in the House and seeks to deliver those convicted of the January 8 attacks, Tarcisio publicly pledged to grant a pardon to Bolsonaro as a “first act” if elected president of the Republic. The statement came after a sequence of criticism by Eduardo and Carlos Bolsonaro about the articulations by a right-wing plate against Lula while Bolsonaro is stuck at home and the moment the governor began to move more clearly towards a presidential dispute in 2026.
Bolsonaro’s trial by coup d’état in the Supreme Court (STF) begins on Tuesday, 2, from 9am, with eight sessions scheduled for all. It will be restricted to the first class of the Court, composed by ministers Alexandre de Moraes, Cristiano Zanin, Flávio Dino, Cármen Lúcia and Luiz Fux. The politician is accused of being the main beneficiary of the coup plot, according to a complaint of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR).

The other defendants of the so-called “crucial core” brought to trial will be former ministers of his government Walter Braga Netto (Civil House), Augusto Heleno (Institutional Security Office), Anderson Torres (Justice) and Paulo Sérgio Nogueira (Defense), as well as Alexandre Ramagem (former director of ABIN and currently federal deputy for PL-RJ), Almir Garnier Santos Navy) and Mauro Cid (former ordinant of orders).
The PGR called for the conviction of all for five crimes: armed criminal organization, attempted to violently abolish the Democratic Rule of Law, coup, qualified damage and deterioration of listed heritage. Ramage, however, had suspended by the House of Representatives the crimes allegedly committed after the diploma.
PL President Valdemar Costa Neto said last week that he has the affiliation of the governor of Sao Paulo if he hit Bolsonaro, ineligible until 2030, the withdrawal of the former president’s candidacy and his open support in the dispute. This movement has been announced by the party chief for years, yet unsuccessfully. With the proximity of the elections, however, Republicans try to avoid leaving. The acronym of “Centrão” commands a ministry in the Lula administration, the ports and airports, with Silvio Costa Filho.
