The vice president and minister of industry, Geraldo Alckmin, said on Monday that “there will be room” to seek understanding with the United States. He indicated that, before the application of the economic reciprocity law, in response to the US government’s tariff to Brazilian products, the Brazilian government bets on a negotiation with the US.

“The law of reciprocity, a beautiful law, will be applied in due time, but what we want is to solve through negotiation,” Alckmin told CNN Brazil.

Last Thursday, 28, as revealed by Estadão, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva authorized Itamaraty to trigger the Foreign Trade Chamber (Camex) to start consultations, investigations and measures to apply reciprocity measures against the US.

Alckmin announced that it will be published on Tuesday, 2, the ordinance with the suspension of the payment of taxes provided for in the Drawback regime.

“Companies will have a year without having to pay the tax, nor need to pay the fine and can export to both the United States and other countries. This was the sector of the productive sector, which will be resolved tomorrow with the publication of Drawback.”

Alckmin stated that Brazil seeks approximations with both the United States and China, even in the American tariff scenario. After being asked about the approach to the Asian country, Alckmin said that Brazil “has no dispute with anyone,” only defends its sovereignty.

“The task is to approach both of them, not incompatible. China is the largest buyer in Brazil, is the largest commercial partner. The United States is the largest investor in Brazil. What we want is a great relationship with China,” he said, listing some recent investments from Chinese in the country.

About the US, he cited the more than 3,500 American companies present in Brazil. And he summarized, “We want to strengthen this economic complementarity.”

About the trip to Mexico last week, the vice president took a positive balance of the mission of the Brazilian government, maintaining that there is affinity between the two countries, because they are the largest economies in Latin America and the two largest democracies in the region.

“I would say it was a very useful trip, with good results for Agro, good results for services and investments,” he said. “There is a lot of room for economic complementarity.”

The deputy also commented on the recent meeting he had with Big Tech representatives and said the whole world discusses the regulation of technology companies.
