The Brazilian health system faces a significant financial challenge due to cases of dengue and chikungunya, with spending that exceeded 1.2 billion reais between 2015 and 2024. The calculation of costs was based on lost hospitalizations, mortality and years of life, with a total of 1,125,209 cases of almost 2% chikungunya resulted in hospitalizations. Regarding dengue, 13,741,408 cases were recorded, leading to almost 500,000 hospitalizations. The Brazilian consultancy in health management conducted the survey of costs, which reflects the pressure on the country’s health system.

The Arbovirus panel, monitored by the Ministry of Health, revealed that from January to August 2025, 1.5 million probable cases of dengue were recorded, resulting in 1,609 deaths and 354 cases in investigation. In the same period, Chikungunya accounted for 120,000 probable cases, with 110 confirmed deaths and 70 cases in investigation. These numbers emphasize the importance of preventive measures, such as the elimination of containers that can accumulate water, the main focus of proliferation of transmitting mosquitoes. Prevention by cleaning backyards and vacant lots is crucial to prevent mosquito proliferation.
