The death toll of the worst of Afghanistan has increased to over 1,400 on Tuesday. At the same time, 3,251 have been injured and more than 8,000 homes have been destroyed. According to the authorities there are fears that more people have been trapped under the ruins.
UN coordinator in Afghanistan said the report is likely to increase. The earthquake has been more affected by the eastern provinces of Kounar and Nangarhar.
‘We don’t know how many dead in Afghanistan’
On Monday, rescue operations were carried out in four villages that were seriously affected by Kunar. Efforts will now focus on reaching more remote mountainous areas.
The head of disaster management of the province, Esanulah Esan said, talked about the course of investigations. “We cannot accurately predict how many carcasses can be trapped under the ruins,” Esan said. “Our effort is to complete these businesses as soon as possible and to start distributing help to the affected families.”
Mountain territory and bad weather prevented rescuers from reaching remote areas along the Pakistani border, where the earthquake leveled hundreds of mud and brick houses.
On Tuesday, an ambulance tail was on the damaged mountain road trying to reach Kunar villages as helicopters were flying, transporting supplies and transporting injured to hospitals, according to a Reuters witness.
Some of the injured have been taken to hospitals in Kabul and the neighboring Nangarhar province, Ehsan said. Thousands of children are in danger, the United Nations Fund warned Tuesday.
“The damaged roads, the ongoing aftershocks and the remote locations of many villages are seriously difficult to help,” the World Health Organization said, adding that more than 12,000 people have been hit by the earthquake.
