Extensive landslides in the west of Sudan in the Darfur region have already claimed at least a thousand lives, announced on Monday evening the movement managing this area. According to the AFP report, TASR reports this.
The landslides occurred on Sunday after a few days of intensive rains that hit the village of Tarasin in the Jabal Marra Mountains, said the Sudanese liberation movement/army (SLM/SLA). “Initial information suggests that all the inhabitants of the village have died except one, and it is estimated to be more than a thousand people,” it said.
Extensive landslides completely destroyed the village and part of the region known for cultivation of citrus. SLM/SLA has turned to the United Nations organization and other humanitarian organizations for help picking up bodies.
The Sudanese civil war has continued for the third year and has caused one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. In some parts of the Darfura, famine has already been declared. Since March, when the army took control of the capital Chartum, the fighting in Darfur has also intensified.
