Between last Sunday (31/8) and this Monday (1st/9), two police officers lost their lives after being surprised by armed criminals. Policeman Elber Fares and military police Anderson de Souza Figueira worked at the front line of the fight against crime in Rio de Janeiro (RJ).
However, they are not the first victims. From January to July this year, 42 police officers were murdered in RJ while warfare against criminal factions. The number is 147% higher than that registered in the same period last year, when 17 police officers were killed. The data are from the National Public Security Information System (Sinesp), the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP).

No chance of defense
On May 19 this year, the Civil Police Office of the Special Resources Coordination (Core) died after being shot in the head during an operation in the City of God, West Zone of Rio.

The injured colleague was Cape Marco Antonio Matheus Maia. He had been shot on his forehead in confrontation with criminals. Maia was admitted to the PM Central Hospital in Estácio and died in December 2024 after a long struggle for life.
At the time, the video spread throughout the country. In the comments, Kelvyton received hundreds of messages of admiration.
Killed in front of the son
Responded at the 166th Police Station (Angra dos Reis), Elber Fares was on the night of last Sunday (31/8), in front of his son, after leaving a church in the Balneário neighborhood, in Costa Verde Fluminense.
According to witnesses, a car approached the agent’s vehicle at the time he opened the door. The shooter fired at least three times.
Security cameras in the region caught the execution. In the images, you can see the moment when the son runs desperate toward his father, who falls to the ground, while the criminal returns to the car and runs away.
Severely injured, Elber was taken by the firefighters to the Japuíba Municipal Hospital (HMJ), but could not resist. He had been hit by at least five shots, according to preliminary Civil Police information.
The first line of investigation points out that local traffickers may be behind the execution, but the Civil Police do not yet rule out other hypotheses, as an attempted robbery.
Assassinated in operation
Military police since 2002, packed in the 41st BPM (Irajá), was murdered while acting in an action at the Chapadão Complex, in Costa Barros, in the North Zone of Rio.
Despite being rescued alive and taken to the Ronaldo Gazolla Municipal Hospital, Figueira could not resist the injuries.
The moment he was hit, he searched inside a church in order to capture leadership of a faction that hid there.
The operation aimed to repress the movement of criminals involved in territorial disputes, as well as curing vehicle thefts and cargo on the main access roads to the locality.
After the confrontation, two other men accused of participating in the attack on the 41st BPM teams were rescued to Ronaldo Gazolla Hospital in Acari, where they remain hospitalized in police custody.
Lieutenant Figueira was 43 years old and joined the corporation in 2002. He leaves his wife and three children.
