In Belgrade, anti -government protests continue after months.
Thousands of people on Monday again marched the streets of Serbia Belgrade as part of the continuing anti -government protests, which have been putting pressure on President Aleksandar Vučič for months. TASR reports this based on AFP and Reuters reports.
Monday march took place in symbolic silence in memory of 16 victims of the collapse of the concrete shelter at the railway station in Novi Sad, which occurred ten months ago. According to a large part of the Serbian public, corruption and laxity of officials contributed to the tragedy of 1 November, and only a few months after the reconstruction of the station occurred.
Pressure for early choices
In January, the public pressure led to the resignation of Prime Minister Miloš Vučevič and the fall of his government. Demonstrators continue to demand announcement of early elections, but the President Vučič repeatedly refuses and describes the protests as part of a foreign conspiracy.
“Corruption is the root of all problems in our society. The elections can be the only solution to this situation,” said 35-year-old scientist Srdjan, one of the participants of the protest, for Reuters.
Student initiatives
The demonstration on Monday had a peaceful course, unlike the protests from mid -August, which resulted in violence and hard police intervention. In addition to Belgrade, it was also protested in Novi Sad, Kragujevaci or Aleksinaci. Since the beginning of the protests, the police have registered approximately 23,000 meetings, some of which have attracted hundreds of thousands of people.
Students, opposition groups and anti -corruption organizations blame Vučič and his allies from linking to organized crime, suppressing media freedom and the use of violence against political opponents. Government officials deny these accusations.
The Government Serbian Progressive Party (CIS) organizes its own meetings. According to the police, more than 100,000 people participated in the Sunday meeting, but the AFP’s data failed to verify independently.
