The Federal Supreme Court (STF) will have the highest level of security over all two weeks in which it will judge former President Jair Bolsonaro for the attempted coup after the 2022 elections. On Tuesday morning, legislative police reinforced the scheme, with the support of sniffer dogs.
The trial begins on Tuesday and should extend until the 12th, with a forecast that special security measures also remain in the next two weeks, due to the inauguration of the new President of the Court, Minister Edson Fachin, scheduled for September 29.
The reinforcement includes the closure of the Três Powers Square, the presence of the Military Police, Bope and Federal Police COT, as well as the installation of new metal detection gantry at the Court’s entrances. There will also be more vehicles and ostensive policing around the Supreme Court, with officers of the Judicial Police and four other courts displaced to Brasilia.

Part of this staff, including 30 guards from Rio and São Paulo, already sleeps on the courts since the beginning of the week.
The special scheme also foresees the use of sniffer dogs and thermal image monitoring drones, capable of daytime and night scan, as well as backpack magazines and greater access control to the court’s premises.
The measures follow the protocol of the highest degree of surveillance expected for high risk situations – a category that, in the Supreme Court, was only adopted in episodes such as the trial of the monthly and in times of serious threat to the court’s headquarters.

The trial is considered the most important in the recent history of the Court for involving, for the first time, a former president accused of attempted coup. The concern is reinforced by the coincidence of dates with September 7, when there are traditionally political acts in Brasilia, and the recent history of episodes of tension in the capital. Among them, the explosion of a home artifact by a bomb man in the three powers’ square in 2022 and the threat of invasion of the STF in 2021 by Bolsonaro supporters.
The Federal District Public Security Bureau has set up an integrated operation with the STF Judicial Police, which includes an intelligence cell for social networking monitoring and real -time analysis of suspicious movements. The expectation is to reduce the response time and prevent any attempted turmoil during the trial.
The secretary also said it will use state -of -the -art equipment, including drones with thermal image capacity. According to the agency, the use of these drones “allows daily scanning, which will be performed on both day and night, detect movements and objects at great distances, even without lighting, ensuring continuous and effective surveillance of the perimeter”.
