Lawyer Demosthenes Torres said on Tuesday that he likes former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and made himself available to “bring cigarettes to him anywhere.” Demosthenes, who defends the former Navy commander Almir Garnier Santos, made the statement during his oral support in the trial of the coup plot’s criminal action.

“So if Bolsonaro needs me to cigarette for him anywhere, I take it, count on me.” He is a person I like, ”said Demosthenes.

The lawyer referred to a popular expression, usually said in a joke, about bringing cigarettes to those in jail. Bolsonaro is being tried, as well as Garnier and six other defendants, for an alleged coup attempt. The penalty can reach 43 years in prison.

Earlier, in his speech, the lawyer recalled a meeting with Bolsonaro at Brasilia airport. At the time, he said he was avoided by former politicians after being revoked as a senator, but said he was greeted by Bolsonaro.

“One day, I was already out of politics and was at the airport in Brasilia.” My former colleagues passed me and such. Suddenly, Bolsonaro passed with a backpack, looking like a lead soldier, and it was. I told my wife, “Even Bolsonaro is avoiding me.” Then he stopped there in the x-ray, looked, saw me, ran back, gave me a hug and said, “Senator, to me, nothing happened.”
