The Federal Prosecutor’s Office was contrary to the request made by the Federal Police to suspend the position of the governor, Wanderlei Barbosa ().
The politician was removed on Wednesday (3) by order of Minister Mauro Campbell of (Superior Court of Justice). The STJ Special Court refered the decision this afternoon.
The investigation in question investigates embezzlement of public money during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In its manifestation, the MPF cited the existence of consistent evidence against the governor and other authorities, but not enough for “drastic” measures, such as the removal from office.
The prosecution’s argument was that it was not possible to demonstrate the risk of criminal law enforcement with the elements presented by the PF, because either the facts was not new or because the circumstances do not concern the exercise of the position.
The MPF manifested itself on two occasions, contrary to these measures twice.
The STJ minister wrote in his decision, however, that “despite the considerations made by the Federal Prosecutor”, considered the requirements and assumptions to exceptional precautionary measure.
According to the investigation, the governor and his wife, Karynne Sotero Campos, created a wide scheme of embezzlement of public resources by providing basic baskets during the pandemic.
One of the important points cited in the inquiry is the construction of a “luxury” hostel, as described by the PF, which would be part of the crime of money laundering.
The venture, which is close to Palmas (TO), is in the name of the governor’s son, but the police say that, in fact, this is just a device to conceal heritage.
According to the investigation, the works have cost at least $ 6 million.
The MPF defended, instead of removal from office, the deepening of calculation, with the analysis of bank and tax data already collected and the request of reports updated to the Coaf (Financial Activities Control Board), to clarify the crimes and raise new evidence.
In the decision, Minister Mauro Campbell stressed that the severity of the facts required immediate measures. He had also requested from the PF to remove deputies allegedly involved in the scheme, but was denied.
In addition to the governor, his wife Karynne Sotero, an extraordinary secretary of social participation, was also removed for 180 days from office.
In the same operation, Federal Deputy Ricardo Ayres (-TO)-Functional apartment suffered pursuit and seizure of the PF.
