The phenomenon occurs when the earth is positioned between the sun and the moon, projecting its shadow over the natural satellite. The illuminated edge of the terrestrial atmosphere reflects reddish tones that project themselves on the moon, creating the effect of the so -called “blood moon”.

In some rare cases, the moon may even acquire a bluish tone. This happens when the light crosses the ozone layer, which disperses blue photons.

How to watch the lunar eclipse in Brazil?

In Brazil, it will not be possible to accompany the naked eye. This is because the eclipse will start at 12:28 pm (Brasília time), before the moon birth.

In cities like Natal, the penumbral eclipse would start at 5:21 pm, but would end a few minutes later, without being noticeable.

Even without direct visibility, Brazilians will be able to follow the live broadcast by the National Observatory (ON), linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. A from 12pm.

According to the Time and Date website, about 7.19 billion people, approximately 85% of the world’s population, will be within the visibility area of ​​the eclipse.

  • Antarctic.

The total eclipse phase will be 82 minutes long. Approximately 4.9 billion people will be able to follow the event from start to finish if the sky is clean.

Next eclipses

The next total lunar eclipse will take place on March 2, 2026, partially visible in Brazil. Already on June 26, 2029 there will be another, this is visible throughout the country, with a maximum duration of 1h42.

Still in 2025, on September 21, a partial eclipse of the sun is expected to be observed from Antarctica.
