Missiles, fighters and other military equipment from China-some exhibited to the public for the first time-were shown in a large parade in Beijing on Wednesday, 3. The event marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Troops marched in a synchronized step against President Xi Jinping, who leads the Communist Party and heads the Armed Forces. Dozens of foreign leaders attended the parade, such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

XI made a brief speech in memory of the victims of World War II and warned of the risk of new conflicts. “Today, humanity is facing the choice between peace and war, dialogue or confrontation, mutual gains or zero sum,” he said.

Trump’s response

During the Parade in Beijing, US President Donald Trump wondered if Xi would mention the “great support and blood the United States gave China to help her guarantee her freedom from a very hostile foreign invader.” “Many Americans have died in search of China for victory and glory. I hope they are properly honored and remembered for their bravery and sacrifice!” Trump wrote on the Truth Social network.

The American president also wished “a day of grand and lasting celebration” to Xi and the “wonderful people of China”, but mocked the presence of the leaders of Russia and North Korea in Beijing: “Please send my most warm greetings to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un while you conspire against the United States of America.”
