Following the adoption of the final text of the Mercosul-European Union Agreement by the College of Commissioners, the Italian government was satisfied with the inclusion of a package of additional safeguards to protect European farmers.
“These additional safeguards include, as Italy has actively requested a rapid monitoring and intervention mechanism in the event of price disorders, including at the level of individual member states, the strengthening of phytosanitary controls in goods received, to ensure full compliance with EU standards and regulations, and a commitment to provide adequate compensation for any affected agricultural supply chains”, ” said the Italian government.
In view of the next formal approval of the Brussels agreement, Italy will still evaluate the effectiveness of the additional guarantees provided and the consequent possibility of supporting or rejecting the final approval of the Mercosur-UE agreement.
