Eyefm was developed by universities and validated in international clinical trials with 44 ophthalmologists from 6 countries
Chinese scientists have released an international collaboration that developed Eyefm, an AI (artificial intelligence) system for diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. The technology was presented on Thursday (4.Set.2025) in a study published in the magazine, after validation in clinical trials conducted in 6 countries.
The model was created by researchers at Tsinghua University and Jiao Tong University of Shanghai, who trained the system with 14.5 million eye images associated with clinical texts from global and multiethnic databases. The approach allows AI to process varied information similar to an ophthalmologist.
Research emerged in response to the limitations of previous AI tools, which usually learned from only one type of data and could not process various information as a doctor.
Eyefm validation was attended by 44 ophthalmologists from China, India, Malaysia, Denmark, Equatorial Guinea and the United States. Professionals worked both in primary care clinics and specialized centers.
The system incorporates a resource called “doctor’s feedback ”a fast cycle that makes the model suitable for use in both clinics with few resources and specialized high complexity hospitals. The functionality allows AI and doctors to work in collaboration.
