Dom Júlio Mattioli School Students participate in practical Banana DNA extraction activity

Dom Júlio Mattioli State School promoted on the afternoon of last Thursday (04), another moment of practical and innovative learning for its students. The activity took place with the 2nd year high school class, room F, of which I am part, providing a unique experience for all of us.

Students observing the banana/photo DNA extraction experiment

Under the guidance of Professor Regiane Estevam de Souza, we were invited to dive into the fascinating universe of genetics through a banana DNA extraction experiment.

The practice was based on the ability provided for in competence (EM13CNT205) of the Common National Curriculum Base (BNCC), which proposes to students to interpret results, to perform predictions about natural phenomena and technological processes, and understand the explanatory limits of science from concepts of probability and uncertainty.

According to Professor Regiane, the main objective was to bring the theory of practice closer, allowing us students to see concretely something that is usually seen only in the books. “When the student can see DNA, he understands not only the structure and function of this genetic material, but also its importance for life and scientific advances. This arouses curiosity and expands interest in biology,” said the educator.

Experience ongoing, highlighting the view of DNA/photo assigned

The experiment used simple and affordable materials such as detergent, alcohol and banana itself, but had a significant impact. For many colleagues, it was the first time they could directly observe DNA, an essential component of all living cells.

During the activity, in addition to learning fundamental concepts of genetics, we also develop scientific observation skills, analysis and interpretation of results, exercising critical thinking. The enthusiasm was general, making the afternoon not only educational, but also remarkable for the whole class.

Dom Júlio Mattioli State School has been standing out for investing in pedagogical practices that stimulate student protagonism and strengthen investigative learning. Professor Regiane’s initiative reinforces the institution’s commitment to provide quality education, which goes beyond theory, bringing the student closer to science significantly.
